You do not need to check each cinema's website one by one. The English-language screenings from cinemas across Vienna are pulled together on a single page, so finding a film in English is a two minute job instead of a weekly chore. Start with what is showing in English, which is updated daily.
The old way was tab after tab: open one cinema site, hunt for the few undubbed sessions, then repeat for the next. English Cinema Vienna does that collecting for you and keeps it current, so you can see the English options in one view.
What do OV and OmU mean?
Most big international releases in Vienna are dubbed into German. To watch a film in its original English, look for two labels:
- OV (Originalversion): the film is shown in its original language, with no dubbing. For an English-language film, that means you hear the original English soundtrack.
- OmU (Original mit Untertiteln): the original version with subtitles, usually German subtitles. The audio stays in the original language; the subtitles are just reading support and are easy to ignore if you follow the dialogue.
Both labels mean the same thing that matters to you: the film keeps its original soundtrack rather than being dubbed. Our listings already filter for the English-language sessions, so you can browse without decoding every label yourself.
Which cinemas show films in English?
English-language screenings turn up all over the city, from small art houses to the big multiplexes. A few worth knowing:
- Burg Kino sits on the Opernring near the State Opera and specialises in original-version films. It is best known for its long-running screenings of The Third Man, the classic set in postwar Vienna, shown in the original English.
- Artis International, tucked into the first district near Stephansplatz, is one of the busiest spots in town for original-version releases.
- English Cinema Haydn on Mariahilfer Straße is a long-standing address for films in English.
- Votiv Kino and De France are well-established houses that regularly programme original-version cinema.
- Actors Studio, Filmcasino and Metro Kinokulturhaus round out the independent and repertory side.
- For current blockbusters in English, the multiplexes deliver, including Cineplexx Apollo & IMAX and Cineplexx Millennium City.
This is a sample, not the full list. See every venue we track on the cinemas page, and check the films page to see which of them actually has something in English on the day you want to go.
